Carved Wood Pema Crucifixes
These Pema crucifixes are among the finest carved in the world. From seven foot Church crucifixes, to smaller home size crucifixes, several size crucifixes are available.

Located high in the mountains of Northern Italy bordering Austria and Switzerland, the combination of a rich supply of wood and the long winter months in the Gardena Valley were the reason why many families began supplementing their agricultural living by selling their wood carvings. The long tradition of wood carving in this region began with the creation of toys and dolls.

The Mahlknecht family has been one of the famed valley's leading workshops in the art of wood carving for generations. The many attempts to imitate them bear witness to the great world wide popularity and desirability of their work. The crucifixes are made of maple and selected mountain lindenwood dried and seasoned for years, sometimes decades, then meticulously painted and decorated by hand. Lindenwood is a relatively light weight wood and unfinished, it is blond in color.
