The Slovak and Czech Republics are bordered on the north by Poland and Germany and on the south by Austria and Hungary, with the eastern end of Slovakia sharing a border with the Ukraine.

These two countries have a very old Christian heritage with ninety-five percent of Slovaks being Roman Catholics. With ancient histories dating from the first century A.D., some of Europe's most beautiful cities and country side as well as the stories of some of Europe's most dramatic events, can be found within the borders of these two small countries.

These hand carved crucifixes follow styles hundreds of years old and are made by people who deeply understand and love the faith. Even after many decades of Communist rule and religious oppression, the people of Slovakia and Czechoslovakia were able to preserve their cultural and artisitc heritage as represented by these beautfiful carvings.

The style on this corpus is distinctive of the region with a trace of Byzantine elements. The carving is done in a classic motif, finished flat, with only the front having detail. The nails are separately carved pieces passing through the hands and feet. This crucifix measures 14 inches.
